It had been in early access for quite some time, allowing densus toto devs to fine tune gameplay to perfection. The launch build has since been updated, and as it stands, Baldur’s Gate 3 is simply one of the best RPGs you can play on PS5. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a direct sequel to the 2018 medieval RPG, and it pretty much improves on the formula in every way possible. It manages to feel wholly unique, doubling down on immersive sim elements, and excelling where other RPGs tend to falter.

Split Fiction (87%)Another co-op hit from Hazelight, an unreasonably varied two-player adventure set in sci-fi and fantasy worlds. It’s extra attractive because only one player has to own a copy, even for online play. Aside from Stardew Valley’s re-review, only one new game received a 10 from IGN this year, and it was none other than FromSoftware’s first Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. This new expansion not only adds an entire new area to The Lands Between to explore, but a suite of new weapons, armors, and even combat styles like martial arts, makes FromSoftware’s magnum opus even better.

The Last of Us Part 1 takes the iconic PS3 title and drags it into the modern age. Its visuals have been rebuilt from the ground up, bringing things more in-line with the game’s sequel (which has since also been remastered). The main draw here is the opportunity to revisit one of the most iconic games of the last 20 years, one that’s influenced the way narrative storytelling has evolved in this industry over time. Assassin’s Creed Shadows returns to the dual protagonist system first introduced in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Things are quite different here, given that Naoe and Yasuke have particularly distinct fighting styles. Naoe is your classic assassin, using the environment to her advantage, and relying on stealth for her kills.

The finale’s structure itself is pretty clunky due to wrapping up the protagonist’s story prematurely and playing catch-up with the rest of the cast for the remaining episode. Squid Game season 3 brings Gi-hun’s second round in the games to an end, offering plenty of thrilling challenges and dark twists in the final stretch. Although Squid Game might not have completely stuck its landing, its third season still offers plenty of absurd thrills that make the series well worth one final binge.

Here are our favorites from a diverse year, sortable by platform and genre. This time there’s a new set of them, and they’re as heartless and downright despicable as you’d expect. For a bit of dark and savage comic relief, they’re very entertaining. It’s their twisted idea to have Player 222’s baby take her place when she ultimately dies in the games. With the baby’s life in peril and without any recourse to destroy the Front Man or stop the games, he chooses to sacrifice himself.

Mario Kart World is a gorgeous racing game with endless hours of fun to be had, though its defining new game mode doesn’t quite hit the mark. “Mighty Man” is OpenCritic’s way of tagging games based on the scores awarded to them by top critics. Sega’s famous speedy hedgehog and his edgy counterpart race onto Nintendo’s new console with the acclaimed collection Sonic X Shadow Generations. This bundle will give you the remaster of Sonic Generations (aka one of the best Sonic games ever released) and the paraquel 2024 title Shadow Generations, which sees Shadow the Hedgehog face off against Black Doom.
